Principal's Message
I am entering my second year as principal at South Central Elementary, and it has been a rewarding experience so far. Before joining Canon-McMillan, I always held the District in high regard; from a distance, it was clear that this was a place committed to excellence. However, during the interview process, I gained a much deeper understanding of the District's initiatives, particularly the intentional and thoughtful approach to curriculum.
What especially resonated with me was the District’s commitment to structured literacy. The way Canon-McMillan supports student learning through evidence-based practices demonstrates a precise alignment with my own educational values. The level of collaboration, forward-thinking mindset, and strong sense of community within the District made it clear that this was an environment where I could grow as a leader and make a meaningful impact. I’m proud to be part of a team that is dedicated to doing what’s best for students every day.
My vision for South Central Elementary over the next few years is centered on creating a learning environment where every student feels valued, supported and challenged to reach their full potential. I want our school to be a place where strong academic foundations are built through high-quality instruction, particularly with continued emphasis on structured literacy and evidence-based practices that meet the diverse needs of all learners. We are committed to creating a school environment where all students feel a sense of connection.
One way we actively promote student belonging is through our MACS (Models, Accountable, Caring, Safe) program. This initiative was developed to amplify student voices and give them leadership opportunities within the school community. MACS is tied to our PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) framework, reinforcing positive behavior and encouraging students to model the core values we strive to uphold daily.
Through MACS, students are empowered to contribute ideas, participate in school-wide initiatives and serve as role models for their peers. This strengthens our school culture and helps every student feel that they are an essential part of something bigger. By combining student voice with a supportive behavioral framework, we’re building a school where everyone feels included, respected and ready to learn.
The culture at South Central Elementary is one of support, collaboration and high expectations, rooted in a deep commitment to doing what is best for kids. Our school is a place where students, staff and families work together to create a positive and inclusive learning environment where everyone feels welcome and valued. We focus on building strong relationships as the foundation for student success. You can sense the community spirit the moment you walk through our doors. Students are greeted with kindness, staff support one another and families are critical partners in the educational journey. We also emphasize personal growth, both academically and socially. Through initiatives like PBIS and our MACS program, we celebrate positive behavior and promote leadership. At South Central, we take pride in creating a culture where every child is encouraged to be their best self, because ‘Every Day Counts!’
Being an elementary principal is a privilege I never take for granted. Elementary schools are special places filled with energy, curiosity and joy. What I enjoy most about being a principal at Canon-McMillan is the opportunity to witness the daily growth and success of both our students and our staff. Whether it’s a student mastering a new concept or a teacher trying an innovative approach in the classroom, those moments of achievement and progress are rewarding to see.
